How difficult is learning to build with my hands? Renovations, home and garden.....?

I just got my first home at 20 so I'm very excited. However, it's an older home and doesn't come with the "shiny" updates that newer homes have. I want to renovate my entire kitchen and bathroom However, I also hope to save money. Do you think it's possible for me and a group of friends (with no building experience, but good at reading directions) to put together a nice finish, or should I just look into hiring someone?
I forgot -- for the Garden I want to build a greenhouse.
