i have a 96 civic dx coupe with bad cv joints. i can buy a pair of [used] front axles for $50, is it hard to replace them? i prefer to do it myself over taking it to a mechanic, i enjoy working on my car.
just for clarification- the cv joints are part of the axle, correct?
my mechanic wil charge $140 for parts and labor, (i think new parts). does this sound fair?

It's pretty easy, I get cv shafts for that car all day new for 39.99 per side, I would install rebuilt or new ones, 50 bucks for two used axles is a jip.

If you buy a service manual like Haynes or something like that for your specific car, you can do it.

BUT...

alignment will have to be done by a proper shop. You may be keen and get it close, but you'll be way off.
