mechanic told us our oil pump is leaking, make sense, since we keep putting oil in it. mechanic also said it is a big job to replace it. how difficult is it to replace an oil pump in a 1992 toyota camry?

Diagnosis is suspect. Does your oil light come on at idle?
The camry has an internal oil pump, so a leak would not be external, Oil would all stay in the crankcase.
Yeah, it would be expensive to fix. Easiest to take engine out.
The leak points are Valve cover gasket, Oil pan gasket, front and rear main seals, and occasionally, Head Gasket.
Take the car to a pressure washer type car wash. Wash the engine, being careful not to wet electric parts. Note where oil is coming from.
Bet on front main seal. Not a difficult fix.
