...out the power steering pump? I have an auto stethoscope and when I listen to the power steering pump on my 2000 Nissan Frontier 4 cylinder truck, its just too loud for my taste. What can I do?(to save $).
It's not hard as long as you have some basic metric tools and some pacients. I would consider investing in a repair manual they are only about 20 bucks and can be very helpful to someone that is new to mechanics.
Loosen the belt tensioner pulley; Disconnect the hoses/lines to the pump, then remove the pump attaching bolts. Reassemble with new pump in reverse order.
You must be old school. I say this because the radio/stereo is usually too loud for most to hear a power steering pump.
I assume the fluid is at the proper level. Did you have to add some at a point? The system could be cavitating and need the air bled out.
If you have to use a stethoscope to hear the noise loudly then don't do that again. If you are not experiencing power steering problems then maybe, to save money, you might just need to turn the radio/stereo up.
Well, I like my mechanics WITHOUT seasoning, gives it more of an earthy flavor. But if you're going to go that route, I recommend garlic to compliment the natural texture of the mechanic. My grandmother also used to sprinkle just a pinch of brown cinnamon on top.
If it was me, I would leave it be if it's still working and wait until it goes. You can actually drive without power steering, it's just harder, so you'd be able to get it wherever you needed to even if it went, but that's just me. Changing the pump is doable for someone who isn't a mechanic, but it's not exactly the easiest do it yourself job either. It would require a good amount of time and effort, and the part itself isn't cheap for most cars.
Well the damn things weren't designed to be quiet. If it's consistent, doesn't give out, then you could really save $ and just wait till it actually breaks.
Problem is....the new one probably will sound just like the one that is in there now. You need a steth to hear and you want to change it? WFYB It's not hard to do. Good luck.
