How did the gov't build the world's most powerful military and mess up everything else?

Amazing that the U.S. can do anything imaginable militarily but can't get Social Security, Medi Care, welfare, infrastructure, medical care, parks, schools etc. to be even a little bit effective. And people chalk it up to "well the Gov't is just incompetent, Oh well".
