The War of the Worlds was intended to shame the British and others who had used western high tech (1800s style) to massacre and utterly annihilate whole populations, such as the Australian genocide of the aboriginal inhabitants of Tasmania. The idea was to present a situation which would have the British facing annihilation from a vastly technologically superior civilization so that they could get a taste of their own medicine. However, it's unlikely the message succeeded.
