How did Roman culture survive?

In many ways it hasn't. We no longer watch public executions in the Coliseum or hold family slaves. Our economies are based on free international trade, while Rome tended to drain resources to fatten things up at home. Rome considered its citizens to be first class, while locals living in the colonies were less than nothing.

Archaeologists are still studying the layouts of the typical Roman house to try and discover how the average family lived. Roman civilization fell so hard even that simple information was lost!
