how did Catholicism become so deep rooted in Mexican culture?

I need the know the history of who landed in Mexico and "convinced" the Mexican people to give up their religion in exchange for Catholicism? And how they did it?

This is for a college paper.
Please provide source links, thanks!

no one convinced the native mexicans to do anything, they wiped 'em out with small pox and replaced them with catholic spaniards (idk why spain is so catholic). sure there was some interbreeding, but the natives died out and the mixed people were more influenced by their governments than the traditions of some dying group.
