How did Abraham Lincoln respond to the south secession?

I have to do an essay about the changes that Abraham Lincoln have dealt with. The south seceeding is one of them but i dont know how Lincoln responded to the change. I first have to describe it and then write the leaders response to the change.

I try to look it up but i really didnt find anything that would help me understand what he did in response towards the situation.
