"How did Abraham Lincoln help end the civil war?"

He surrendered to the South.

He summoned Star Fleet Command to send 10 ships to defeat the South. They were successful.
 
He fought a long, costly, unpopular war on US soil that destroyed property and killed hundreds of thousands of people. Eventually his side won, but it was a narrow thing and to many, a Pyrrhic victory. Most did not believe victory was worth the price. And Lincoln was hated in his own time. Only after his death did anyone celebrate his achievement of keeping the union together.
