how did Abraham Lincoln change America?

I'm doing a project on him and i dont know very much about him ( im not American)
i've nearly finished it but i need to know if he changed anything apart from slavery, preserving the union and making future presidents more careful ( since he was the first on to get assassinated)

What were his beliefs, other than people shouldn't be slaves?
How were his beliefs and principals tested?
 
He ensured that the Federal Government in Washington would be able to decree, as an emperor would, what the various states could and would do. The millions of Americans who died were told that they were fighting for other things, but it was the federal bureaucracy that won that war!
