I once owned a $300 Trek hybrid bike. I took it to college in Columbus, OH and bought a high quality lock for it ($100, top of the line kryptonite, weighed about 10lbs.)
The only way I could store the bike was in an outdoor bike race just outside a large dorm. It was well lighted and traveled.
One day I came out to get it, and the back tire had been kicked. The rim was bent, the rear axle was broken and the wheel was separated from the bike. The brakes and chain were also screwed up. I would told that the repair cost would have exceeded the value of the bike!
Was there any security measure I could have used to prevent this from happening?
I was wondering if there was anything else I could have done
-perhaps covers for bikes that will be outside for long-term. I know motorcycles have them.
-Or stronger rims and axles that are meant to prevent disassembly.
