How could I of stayed warm?

Ok, so I was stuck in san jose for the weekend with my friend and we missed our train back to SF. So we had to spend the night in san jose. Only problem was we had no where to stay. Our phones were dead. And it was already really late. We had to sleep in a field and it was extremely extremely cold. Like shivering twitching cold, can't talk cold. All I had on was pretty much a t shirt and a sweatshirt and a beanie, along with my friend. Besides the obvious pants and shoes. Whats one way I could of stayed warm?
 
Found someplace like Walmart that was open 24 hours. If you were in Oklahoma you probably could of walked up and knocked on just about anyones door, told them your situation and they would of let you have the couch or spare room. Or stayed in the train station that is probably what I would of done. I guess you also could of gotten a motel room.
 
avoiding an open field would have been a good idea. What about sitting in a restaurant that is open 24/7.
