How come you see the sheriff parked out side the pulls on election day?

I live in cook county Illinois and my Junior high and high school where booth pulling places and I always saw a sheriffs car parked outside so could someone please tell me why on election you see a sheriffs car parked outside the pulling places?
 
after you vote all the ballots are taken from the voting priicents to
a tabulation place (usually found at the headquarters for the Register of voter)
the sheriff deputies are usually the ones that transport the ballots to the tabulation place
(at least that's the way they do in Los Angeles county (and for far
off locations (Catalina and Lancaster/Antelope they fly them (via the sheriff helicopters)
so the processis pprobablysilmar
 
If there are a lot of minority voters there or voters for the democrats then I would suspect he is there to intimidate the voters.
