How come when I unplugged the vcr/dvd player...?

and then plugged it in after like 5 hours (had to move it because I was painting) it still knows the current time. I have never even set it before?

Actually when I plugged it in it just displayed "--:-- " and then after about a half hour it displayed the time.

If it is a new one, and happens to be connected to cable or satellite, it possibly just recieved the current time digitally and set itself. That is my theory based on what you are describing.
And it might also have a backup battery that keeps track of the time and programmed channels and stuff.
 
Because, I think the vcr/dvd player has a small rechargable battery in it that keeps just the clock on. Even though the display on the vcr/dvd player dosen't say the time, inside of it, it keeps track using that tiny battery.
