Ledger's performance wasn't just a Joker performance. I'd put it up there with some of the best acting jobs I've ever seen.

well both portrayals had elements of the joker character..

nicholsons joker was psychotic, more of a vicious prankster while still being extremely violent.

ledgers joker was psychotic but more of a terrorist with less of a jokey/prankster edge.

Burton's Batman movies were both very dark, especially compared to what Schumacher did to the franchise when he took over.

The original Joker has so many great parts and one liners it's hard to say which is really better than the other. They're both great takes on the character.
