Patrick Kennedy tired of public life, author says
Patrick Kennedy's two siblings are cancer survivors. His mother has battled alcohol abuse. His father died last year. And he has a chronic mental illness that can be aggravated by stress.
West also noted that Patrick has personal mental health issues – he has been diagnosed as bipolar – that likely could be aggravated by the public life he has led since being elected 16 years ago. "Moving out of the public spotlight should help him get a handle on his private life,'' he said.

But Patrick's story turned stereotypically Kennedy in other ways. He has battled depression, drug addiction and bad publicity, as in 2000 when he argued with a girlfriend aboard a yacht he had chartered; she got the Coast Guard to take her to shore. He later trashed the boat. The car crash last Thursday at about 2:45 a.m. was the most bizarre incident yet. Capitol police officers, who suspected that Kennedy, 38, was drunk, alleged he was given special treatment: a superior told them not to give a sobriety test but to take Kennedy home.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who has struggled with depression, alcoholism and addiction for much of his life, said Friday that he has checked into a medical facility for treatment. The Rhode Island Democrat, who sought treatment three years ago after an early morning car crash near the U.S. Capitol, said in a statement that his recovery is a "lifelong process" and that he will do whatever it takes to preserve his health.
