How come the cabin lights in my car don't work?

I drive a 2000 BMW 323i and when I open the door the cabin lights in the back work but the ones in the front don't, even when i press the button to turn them on they still remain off, its been like this ever since I bought it (used) a few months ago what's the problem?
 
Is there a switch near the dome light? A lot of foreign cars have a switch that you can put to three settings: Off, On always, On only when the door is open.

Otherwise you have blown light bulbs or a wiring problem. Get yourself an LED keychain if all else fails :)
