How come so many military things have an M at the beginning of the name?

I mean, you have the M4, M16, M1, M14, M1014, and sooooooo much more. I haven't caught a pattern in the names of them, and I don't quite get it. Does M just stand for military? If someonecould elaborate a bit for me, that'd be great.

M stands for Military. UH-1 (Huey) stands for Utility Helicopter model. 1 F-18 stands for Fighter model 18. You may think this is funny but in the first half of the twentieth century, some members of the military who had receive little or no education learn the alphabet with this method.
