How come my scanned photos look really bad on my computer?

I have a epson cx8400 all in one printer. I just figured out haw to use the scan function(I had to download something from there site for the scan function to work).But the scanned photos look pretty bad when viewed on my computer. Am I doing something wrong. Or is there a way to have better looking scans?

go to options int he scanner program and increase the quaility of the scan.
