How come going to the gym doesn't work?

I've been going to the gym 5 days a week for the past month and haven't seen any results. I usually workout a muscle group until it feels like it's going to burst for an hour and half, then I run 2-3 miles. Then I go and make a protein shake. I haven't seen much improvements though! Was I just meant to not get muscle?
