How can you test a new speed sensor(1995 Jeep Wrglr)on the Jeep? Should wire(s) be

hot? When? I put in a new one and it's not working. The speedometer and both trip/regular odometers aren't working. There are three wires...when/which one should be hot..i.e. with ignition, at all time, with Jeep running? Thanks.
