whether a horse needs to be hossed down or just groomed after riding/working? my trainer usually tells me whether to hose or brush the horse, but when shes not there how can i know what to do?

If the horse is sweaty, you need to hose - as grooming will rub the sweat into the coat and make him itchy. Once he's cooled down or he's not sweaty, then groom to get rid of any mud - but make sure it is dry because again wet mud will rub into the coat and make him itchy.

What I tend to do is groom before, than sponge down after.

If your horse is sweating and breathing hard, you will want to hose, but make sure you cool him down to the point where he is breathing normally before hosing. If it is warm enough or you have warm water in the wash rack, most horses will appreciate a nice hosing. I always hose mine down in the summer. If there is little to no sweat or it is too cold, just groom him, making sure to spend adequate time on the saddle area. Also, if he is sweaty or wet during colder times, make sure to put a cooler on him to prevent chill. Hope this helps!
