How can you tell if the relationship between two sets of data is not linear.?

hello, this is for my eighth grade pre-algerbra class and for the life of me, I do not remember.?! My only thought was that, "it is a non linear relationship if (x) repeats". Any help on this would be greatly appriciated.!
