How can you rid Salmonella from a turtle tank to put fish in the tank?

My mother just says to hose it off realllly well and let it out to air dry and that would kill all the bacteria or viruses or whatever. Would that work or would I need to get some funky cleaner. And remember, I want to put in fish.

Also, I want to recycle the rocks that were in it too. Would I just do the same thing as the tank?

PS. The turtle only lived in it for about a week and a haf before we put it in our pond if that helps any.

I don't think the salmonella directly effects fish. It is mostly harmful to humans.

To clean the tank you can use hot water and vinegar, and then rinse it well. To clean rocks or decor (not recommended at all for porous rocks or driftwood) you can soak them in a bleach and water solution for a couple of days (about 1 cup bleach for 5 gallons of water). Make sure to rinse them very well, then let them soak another 3-5 days in fresh water. Remove them and let them completely dry before using them. This method will kill any bad bacteria, parasites or diseases. For an alternative method you can use on any decor, I would let them boil in a pot for 20 minutes, and this too should kill just about anything.
