In all fairness, it wasn't Muslims who started that particular nonsense. It was white Christians of European heritage.

To be honest such whitewashes of history are not unknown.
However in this case it's not fair to paint the Muslims as the bad hats over this because it's one nation's president scoring cheap political brownie points by insulting his national rivals.

Because they don't want to be admitted as an evil group.
Don't get me wrong tho ,there are other groups out there who deny the wrong doing of there past, Take China and Japan for example.
The Chines people right now are trying to prove the wrong doings of japan and the history they are trying to hide from the world.
