How can I watch movies from my external hard drive on my tv?

I bought a Phillips LCD Tv which has a USB (I think) for SAT and a HDMI plug! I also bought a WB External hard drive with a small USB hook up. Can someone please help me with getting the movies and songs from the hard drive to play on the tv!? I dont have a SAT box but I do have a PS3 ( if that helps). Thankx so much!
