How can I view the code to edit my HTML document?

I'm working on a HTML/CSS project for an MIS class. I finished all the HTML coding in Textedit (Im working on a Mac), then changed it to plain text and saved it as an HTML document. I can now view it as an actual webpage in Safari, but I can't open just the code back up in Text edit to start the CSS coding. Any help?!?!
