What you need to do is locate where the chat is in Yahoo! Mail and where the status message is that says Offline and change it to Available, Invisible, or Busy.
1. For Yahoo! Classic Mail chat: it is located in a blue box on the left, labeled “Chat & Mobile Text,” just change your status to one of the options I listed above.
2. In the All-New Yahoo! Mail you sign out of chat at the very top of the page to the right of where it says "Hi, your name" You will see your status that it says Offline and use the drop down arrow to change it to Available etc.
Of if you are confused just click the drop down arrow on the New button next to the Check Mail button on the upper right of your Mail page. And choose Chat. It will ask you to click a button to sign in. Just be sure to change your status to Sign out of Chat which makes you Offline when you are done if you also use Yahoo Messenger. If you do not you will get a disconnected notice.
