How can I tighten a pair of baggy tee-shirt sleeves, without the weird twist?

I'm sewing a couple of my boyfriend's new tee-shirts, which are all a little too baggy in the sleeve/armpit area. I've pinned them in place, and without any slack. But when I sew them, and turn them right-side-out, there's this weird twist in the seam. What am I doing wrong?
