...want's out of his crate? He is a 2 1/2 month old lhasa apso and whines to be let out but he also whines when he needs to go to the bathroom so how can I tell I don't want him to think that whining will get him out of the cage but I kind have to because I don't know if he has to go to the bathroom or not.
Fred S i am house training him crate training is the most recommended way and I let him out and play for the recommended amount of time and lhasa's actually aren't crazy about other dogs they are fine with them but ont like then need them.

Your dog is not a canary. He does not belong into a cage.He gets bored and wants to get out and sniff around and meet other dogs .You cannot keep him caged.Plus a dog needs to run..If it is Lhasa or Rotti. They need the exercise.A dog is not a doll that you take out when you want to play with it and when you are finished you put him back into box

take him out right before and after crating. Don't leave him crated for more then a 2-3 hours.

i have never been a fan of crate training, but yes, it is effective. however, if you dog is whining while in a crate, then he thinks of it as his prison. you need to get your dog to think of the crate as his bedroom. the safe place he wants to go to escape, or sleep.
when he is out of the crate, leave the door open, and place the food and toys inside the crate. you shouldnt have your dog in his crate while you are home. nomatter what you do, he will want to be near you. the only times he should be inside the crate are at night, and while you are gone. some people also shut the door while hes eating. you should not use the crate to cage him from peeing in your house. your dog doesnt ever learn WHEN not to pee, just where to pee and where not to pee. you shoulf get him on a schedule where feed him at specific times. and let him out about 10 minutes after he eats and drinks, time how long it takes him to pee, and you can begin to see a pattern. once you get into pattern and he is good at not peeing inside, you will notice he will not pee unless he is outside because that is WHERE to pee. so you can eliminate the crate durring the time you are home. most dogs will whine when they can see or hear you but cant get to you.

win dogs sniffs it means tat ter looking for a spot to pee or use the restroom or u can let him out ever 1 or 2 hour to go to the bathroom

Take him out after each meal, & after he plays. He can wait up to 4 hour at his age. If you think he may need to go ignore him while he is whining and if you hear him stop wait for a few seconds and let him out once he has quieted down. Then he won't get the idea that you are letting him out because he is wining. If your crate is only small enough for him to stand -- turn around and lay comfortably. He won't go potty in there and ti will teach him to hold it. Hope that helps :o)

I believe that you can only lock your dog up for 2-3 hours or else he will go to the bathroom in his pen. When he is done going to the bathroom outside, if you want to you can put him back in his cage but dont leave him in there too long. Also my dog does this too so you can usually tell they really have to go if they stand by the door and bark to go outside. As I said once your dog is done going to the bathroom u can lock him up again if you want to.

Trick for training, when you take him out of his crate go directly to the door and take him potty.don't let him back inside until he goes.EVERYTIME, after a while he will catch on and if he don't need to go out he won't cry until he does.
