I've developed a positive addiction to fermenting in its various forms, particularly things like sauerkrauts. The issue is that I need a rather large container in which to do it and the microbes produce too much acid to safely use anything metal. Ceramic crocks are apparently the best thing, but they're hard to come by, not to mention expensive, if buying them new. A local thrift store has several ceramic crockish-looking things, but I'm not entirely sure if they're rated for food. Any advice on how I might go about verifying? Asking the staff at the thrift store is, as you might expect, a non-starter. They have no idea where they came from.
