How can I stop arguing with my mom and just listen to her? how can i learn

to keep my mouth shut? well sometimes when she tells me something, i would get upset and just argue with her. i just don't understand i always got to have the last word. I remember this girl who goes to school with me, her mother passed away about five or six weeks ago because she was sick. i started to think i need to be more nice to her because if not, and if my mom dies, im going end up beating myself up and regret talking back to her. please help
