How can I sort out my feelings? A rant about improper use of car seats?

I work in fast food and today as with other days I was working as taking money in the drive thru. So, a few different cars pulled in and in many of them I saw infants in infants seats, wow, amazing, I barely see any infants in their seats! THE SEATS WERE FORWARD FACING! WTF? Why? Why do parents do that? I do not understand it. One car, the seat was FF AND BUCKLED? Another it was FF and not buckled. Another the infant was not buckled and it was FF. In another the seat was all side ways, so I doubt it was installed right and the kid had part of the buckle on, but it was so so loose and wouldn't actually protect the child if in an accident. The mothers and/or fathers didn't even bother to worry. In one car they said to the child, "O smile to the lady, say hi!"
I am standing there, like, WTF?
I want to cry. There are so many ignorant people in my town. I do not understand. It makes me want to scream. Why do people do this? Is it THAT God damn hard to install a car seat or get it checked?
Yes, I work in fast food. I am not ashamed of it. I have a job and take care of my child. Thanks for making me apart of of time though.
Once a child is a certain weight they have to be FF, well these children were way smaller than my 12 month old 23 pounder who still and will still continue facing to the rear, that is NOT an excuse.
It is not even just infants. I see toddlers without car seats and older children with and without adult seat belts, and no boosters. I see boosters being used in the front seat. I mean, it is so ridiculous. I see outdated, REALLY old car seats and side ways car seats too. I feel so bad for both the child and the parent.

I live in Illinois.
Janice G: I know at 1 it is "legal" and all, but at least put the child in the appropriate seat. They are FF infant seat which are not made to FF.

That is messed up... before I left the hospital a nurse walked me down to my car to check my carseat! I have one of those car seats that the seat deattaches from the base... so she made sure the base was in correctly and also made sure I knew how tight the straps were supposed to be on him and everything! I am suprised that more hospitals dont do that! They also told me if I had any other questions to stop at any fire station and they would help me! MY son's saftey is very important!

*I dont know why someone would be so rude about you supporting your child... it doesnt matter where you work. Obviously you have more common sense that those people coming to your drive thru!

Wow -where do you live?

I've never seen a kid not in a seat, or not installed in the right direction. Here incorrect installs usually involve the angle, tightness or whether to have the seat resting against the seat in front or not. All three of which are subjective to a degree and the first and second there is debate over.

Once the infant gets over a certain weight, they have to be forward facing. I see your point though. Some people don't realize when you buy a car seat it comes with instructions on how to install them. Baby stores often sponsor car seat safety events where experts show parents how to properly install them. People often don't know they can go to the police station and ask for help.
