How can I refute Jared Diamond's thesis in "Guns, Germs and Steel"?

For summer assignment, I needed to read Jared Diamond's book "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" and now, I have to write an essay refuting his thesis (in other words, I need to come up with a different answer for Yali's question), which was that the reason some societies developed more than others was geography, and that "geography was destiny". How can I refute that?
