It'll depend mostly on which game (and to a certain extent, which mod). Some games let you just extract a mod into the correct file structure in the main install directory and then automatically detect and load them. Others require you enable the mods individually. Still others require you to enable modding in general. Which might require just tweaking a .INI setting or using a piece of official/unofficial mod-manging software.
In other words, we really need more information and you'd be better off using Google to search for a mod installation tutorial for your specific games. Most games have an official forum to support users, too. You could try searching those.
