How can I paint the exhaust pipes black on my 2004 Honda Shadow Sabre?

Do I need to take the pipes off? If so, then how do I do that? What kind of paint should I use? How many coats? Any other useful info?

it will just peel off ,
if its the down pipes you are doing then i would use graphite grate polish/black lead, quick to put on & looks good its just a bit messy putting on,you can get it from good hardware stores or places where they sell the black log burners or that type of fire,
 
No matter what paint you use you will be doing this every year at least. The smart thing to do would be have them powder coated. You take the pipes loose from the heads on the bike.
 
You can take them off, have the chrome bead blasted and paint them with Barbecue paint.
