How can i paint a bass guitar?

I've recently purchased a bass guitar to play with my band. It's going really well but I am quite bored of the plain black. I wanted to know if it is possible to paint it (with quite bright colours) to make it stand out a little bit more. Could you give me suggestions on what equipment I need and any good themes and patterns I could put on my bass? Thank you =)
