Is it worth the trouble when it is cheap to get one? You make one unless you are doing an experiment to find or get something NEW. What is your size & how far to see?

yes, but why would you want to?
in the past, making your own was the only way to get a decent telescope at a decent price. now you can buy excellent telescopes dirt cheap. you will not save any money making your own, nor will you improve on optical quality unless you are *very* good.
