How can I learn to become a mechanic without going to one of those scamming...

...private schools? scammer schools: devy, lincoln tech, gibbs

I googled them and found many complaints against them. That has made me not want to go to them, but unfortunately, I'm unable to find a viable alternative :(

See if you can "intern" at a local place. That way you'll learn first hand and they may pay for your certifications.
Don't know how old you are, but there is also the military path. They'll teach you and pay you!
