how can i keep wallabies, rats and hares from devouring my veg garden

without paying for expensive fencing? do u think spraying them with garlic or something would deter them? thanks . new veggie gardener here.
we dont have bears in australia so i doubt i can get them and nor would i want to hurt them (except for the rats that is) but thanks anyhow
