How can I jailbreak/unlock my iPhone?

I have a 1st generation iPhone running software version 3.1.3. It was given to me by my sister who lives in the US and I live in Canada. I need to jailbreak/unlock it so that it will work with my carrier. What is the best way to go about this? Thanks!
 
Go and google programs like quickpwn, blackrain, redsnow, and others like cydia. I would, but Im too lazy. xD One of those programs should be able to unlock your iPhone to work with your carrier. Make sure you get the CORRECT versions or the program, or your iPhone firmware, that'll match your current one. [3.1.3] If you want, you can jailbreak it, meaning you'll have greater customization over your iPhone.
