Take This To Heart

I'm writing a story, and I need to introduce the main character.
My story is pretty much from the main characters point of view though.
I've thought of introducing him through speech whilst conversing with other characters, but as my story starts off with a dream, then him waking up in the middle of the night, it'd make no sense..
This is what I have after the dream:
I woke with a startle. I desperately tried to make sense of exactly what had been racing through my mind as I lay on my bed, asleep. It was only a dream I thought to myself, relieved. I was sweating a little, so I opened the window which was just above my bedside cabinet. I decided to check the time to see how long I had until I needed to be up. I looked at my phone, it indicated that it was only 4:17A.M. I wasn't particularly tired, so I decided to lay awake, thinking about how today would go. I had school, I had exams, I also had to meet Jessica after school. Jessica Chambers was my friend, well, I guess you could call her my best friend. Me and Jessica have been through pretty much everything with each other, she was there for me, and I for her. I was a lot like my best friend in some ways, though not nearly as ambitious, enthusiastic, optimistic, or open minded. I was more reserved, determined, responsible, and modest.
Would it be a good idea for him to say, recieve a text message from someone saying something like "Hey Alex, hope this doesn't wake you, but remember to bring my dvd with you to school tomorrow." or something along those lines?
Or maybe something totally different?
Also, from what I've written in that paragraph above, what do you think?
Any ideas what so ever would be great!
