How can I improve my gym grade?

Our monthly gym test consists of running a mile, doing a minute of push-ups, and a minute of sit-ups.

How can I run the mile without the urge to stop? When I run the mile right now, I get a cramp in my butt and thighs. It's not that burning feeling; my thighs and butt cheeks actually hurt. Also, how can I do push-ups and sit-ups faster so I can fit them all in a minute?
