How can i improve gym biking faster?

First of all i wanted to know if gym biking and regular biking is the same? Would i get the same effects using the gym bike rather then going outside and biking? Secondly i do the hill program on the equipment at a level ten. i could bike a mile in 4 minutes. the maximum i could bike is two miles before i am knocked out. my legs feel numb after that. I don't know if thats good, if i continue doing that three times a week and then run on the tread mill for 45 minutes 5mph on saturdays, would i start losing weight? if not, tell me how i could imporve. gracias :)
