How can I get the history information of a quad I purchased so I can register it.?

I bought a small quad from a friend who got it as a gift from a family member. Now before I register the quad under my name I first want to find out if it has been paid in full so it doesn't get taken away when I go to the DMV. Does anybody know how I can get the history of the vehicle, or what can happen if I just go the the DMV. When I bought I was given the 2007 registration and instruction manual, but no Pink Slip or anything else.
