How can I get my horse softer as I feel like I am fighting him?

Especially in canter he can be quite strong, so I have to hold him together but then I go stiff and you will be able to see he goes stiff on me instead of in an outline, and just generally any tips about my riding,
advice/ constructive cristism please, thanks
