How can I get more bass out of my stereo?

I have an old Yamah R-85 receiver which still works very well, but doesn't put out much bass. Or are my speakers the problem (Polkaudio R30)? Or could it be the wiring?

My stereo doesn't seem to have an output for a subwoofer, but is there another way to connect one?

Please help me to add more bass to my system, without spending much! Thanks!
Sorry I guess I wasn't clear enough... when I raise the volume and increase the base I get a lot of distortion that is unbearable.

The cause of poor bass is almost certainly the speaker's fault. Only the cheapest junk stereo puts out poor bass. The best way to connect a single subwoofer is through an additional amp (stereo not required as bass has no directionality) with a low pass equalizer, or at least the treble turned down; you should combine the audio from both channels. A pair of sub-woofers is also ok, just be sure to match their phase so that the bass doesn't cancel.

Get yourself a powered subwoofer. You don't necessarily need a dedicated subwoofer output on your receiver in order to hook it up. Most powered subs will also have a right and left signal input. You can bridge it to your older receiver by hooking the right channel of the speaker to the positive terminal of the right speaker output (on the receiver) and the left channel of the speaker to the negative terminal of the left speaker output (on the receiver.) The signal will be a little bit weaker by hooking it up this way but you can turn the volume of the sub up to compensate.

I picked up a used 300w Cerwin Vega subwoofer on craigslist for $60. This thing can shake the house down.
