Wiser with age

I have been riding my fat carcass to work for a year now! 9 miles to and 9 miles from work. Last week I heard a snap and I noticed my ride was a little different. I rode another 3 miles because I have to lose 40 pounds by Saturday I have a wedding to go to. But toward the last mile it was difficult to ride and I got off and noticed the brakes pressing against the back tires. Is there a way I could fix it myself or should I take it to a bike shop?
