How can I find out about current events without knowing any of it?

I can't just start watching the news because I'm ignorant of current events. Any "news for dummies" or sites like that? Also, any sites/newspapers I should avoid because of propaganda? I'm Irish.
 
Any reputable news site like the BBC and then look up the Wikipedia articles on the issues that are in the headlines.

I know Wikipedia is far from perfect, but generally it does a good job if being biased (if an article on a major issue seems biased it will very quickly be edited or highlighted by wikipedia) and does give a decent picture of the issue and contexts
